The Summit of the local officials “Cities for the Climate” took place on the last December 4th and brought together nearly a thousand mayors and representatives from the whole world.
This event intended to show the important place of local government in the discussion about global warming and to pool the best exisiting practices. The Casino Group, as one of the summit partner, presented the operational actions it has implemented as a part of its CSR policy.
The group's activities to reduce the impact of freight transport, improve the energy efficiency of its buildings, recycle waste and raise its clients awareness about consumption, concern a network of 14,500 points of sale around the world (Europe – South America- South & Eastern Asia) and 336,000 contributors.
Here are some of the actions the group did:
- Less polluting transports: 80 Franprix shops (Paris) are supplied with a barge using the Seine river. In Vietnam, « Big C Vietnam is also using maritime transport which emits 3 to 5 times less CO2 depending the area. In Paris again, 25% of Monoprix’s Home Deliveries are done with motorcycle.
- Buildings energetic efficiency: 100 % of hypermarkets « Géant Casino » are actually using the new concept consisting of the installation of doors on the positive cold furniture, reducing by a quarter their energy consumption. Over 90% of stores in Brazil are fully equipped with LED. In several countries, photovoltaic plants have been put into service on roofs of parking structure.
- Recycling and recovering waste. In Brazil, the circular economy program « Novo de Novo », initiated in 2009, has recycled and recovered millions of packages. In addition, with the support from the European Commission, Casino and its partners have set up a major campaign of information and consumer awareness about recycling titled "Together, recycle more, recycle better."
- The actor awareness. In France, the campaign "The solution is in your plate" is relayed in “Géant Casino” hypermarkets and “Casino” supermarkets. It puts forward the most environment-friendly products. In addition, the guide "Fight against food waste 'is distributed in more than 2000 shops.
This list of actions, which is not exhaustive, developed by the Casino group, is set to achieve the objectives. The group is also a signatory of the UN Mondial Pact since 2009, inviting companies to support, within their sphere of influence, fundamental values which take sustainable development in consideration.
